Taylor's collector built this half sleeve around her faith, and the lion carries it. Taylor works the face in her signature peppery black and grey, dense through the mane and soft around the eyes, then drops the surrounding florals into fine line so the lion holds all the contrast. The scripture runs in thin script down the inside of the arm, sized to be read close rather than across a room. She pushes the peonies to the outer edge so the piece flows with the shoulder as it moves. Three sessions so far. By Taylor Phelps.
