The Broken Statue

Monica's collector came to her for a Medusa built like a broken statue, so Monica cracks the face and throat the way old marble splits and lets the snakes coil up out of the hair in heavy black. She keeps the figure in black and grey and saves the color for the oleander and the teal behind it, which pushes the portrait forward on the arm. The collector asked for that teal by name, and Monica runs it as a soft halo so the flowers and the face read as one piece down the forearm. This has taken two sessions. By Monica Snyder.
